Acadia remembers honorary degree recipient, respected Mi’kmaw Elder Freeman Douglas Knockwood
16 June, 2018 — Mi’kmaq elder Doug Knockwood (88) died in Truro. Born on Dec. 11, 1929, he was a residential school survivor and served in the North Nova First Highland Battalion, later joining the 27th Canadian Infantry Brigade. In 1970 he co-founded an alcohol and drug treatment program for Mi’kmaq people in Nova Scotia and implemented programs throughout the province as an addiction counsellor. In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from Acadia University and in 2019 was admitted to the Order of Nova Scotia.
